Staying Fit In Cold Weather

by Nate Rifkin
(United States)

As much as we would like to deny it, with January upon us, it’s official: Winter’s here. And that means cold temperatures, lots more hot food being served and shorter, darker days.

Combine that with the multi-holiday marathon, and it’s no wonder most people pack on almost 10 extra pounds by the time spring rolls around.
MOST people that is. Today I’m going to give you 6 tips to make sure you’re NOT one of them.

1. Resolve to not let cold weather stop you from getting out of the house.

This means if you have a gym membership – keep going. It’s just as warm inside your local gym as it is in your home. I know driving there and back when you’d rather sit with some hot chocolate feels like a pain in the butt, but it’s worth it.

2. Stay fit at home so you don’t HAVE to get out of the house.

Alright if my first point seemed harsh, then here’s how to cheat: Stay home and get in shape in the comfort of your living room or bedroom or anywhere else. There are plenty of exercises that don’t require any equipment or weights. Yoga and bodyweight calisthenics are two perfect examples.

3. Get some sunlight

During the winter season, the sun rises later in the day and sets earlier. A lot of people suffer from depression because their days are basically dark. Even if you have to bundle up, try to get outside a little bit in the middle of the day. You might be surprised just how much your spirits brighten.

4. You know you’re going to eat more treats, so step up the exercise too.

The extra exercise acts as a buffer, so the extra cookies, slices of cake, and drinks won’t matter. Get your metabolism revving at a higher gear and the additional calories have a better chance of turning into fuel and not fat.

5. Wash your hands more often

This simple step can make the difference between coming down with a cold – or worse – and staying healthy during the cold months while your friends and co-workers fall ill.

6. Don’t play the “I’ll start after the holidays are over” card.

NOW is the time to build healthier habits. Why wait? The longer you delay your new goals means the longer you’ll have to wait before seeing the results you want. As Horace said, getting started is half done.
Take advantage of these six strategies and mindsets, and when springtime comes you’ll be looking and feeling better than ever.
